Much the Same Way That Ships Don’t, composed for flutist
Louna Dekker-Vargas (flute), was titled after one of my favorite quotes from Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, “The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don’t.” But in this piece, most of the motives fall, often quite precipitously — that is to say, they fall to the ground (and probably don’t miss), much the same way that ships don’t.
